Hawai`i Watercolor Society

The Hawai`i Watercolor Society was founded in 1962 by Hawai`i Artist Hon Chew Hee. Our aim as an organization is to nurture and stimulate interest in water media through education, exhibits, and collaboration with other organizations, associations and individuals.

The Hawai`i Watercolor Society sponsors two juried exhibits every year as well as a biennial curated show highlighting the work of our signature members. In addition, we host periodic sales, themed shows and community events.

In conjunction with our exhibits we offer two week long workshops each year featuring nationally recognized teaching artists. On an intermittent basis we sponsor shorter duration workshops on a variety of art-related topics.

Juror: Sterling Edwards

Sterling Edwards is an internationally renowned watermedia master artist, instructor, mentor, and author. Sterling began a second career in 1993 to pursue his passion for painting as a visual and interpretive artist. Having studied art since the age of twelve, he developed a unique and expressive style of painting that has since gained international acclaim and the respect of his peers, students, art collectors, and designers.

In 2007, Sterling was awarded signature membership status in the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC). In 2010, he was awarded signature membership status in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA). In 2017 he was awarded signature membership status in the National Watercolor Society (NWS).

Sterling is the author of the best-selling North Light book, “Creating Luminous Watercolor Landscapes, a Four Step Process," published in 2010, and is a featured artist in several other books and international publications. Sterling works from his home studio in the beautiful town of Lewisville, North Carolina.

"My art has taken me places both physically and mentally that I probably would have never gone were I not a visual artist. I've traveled on many artistic paths, freeways, side roads, curves, dealt with the occasional flat tire, dead ends, back alleys, wrong turns, detours, and bad directions. Each one has, in it's own way, influenced or contributed to reaching my final destination; to be an interpretive visual artist.

Everything that I see is broken down into shapes and colors that might be suitable for my next interpretive painting or thought evoking / aesthetic photograph. When I paint, I take great pleasure in rearranging and sometimes distorting and embellishing the shapes and colors of my subjects to suit my individual style. My paintings are not intended to offer the viewer something that they can readily see themselves but rather a unique interpretation as only envisioned through the trained eyes and creative mind of an interpretive artist."
