Hawai`i Watercolor Society

The Hawai`i Watercolor Society was founded in 1962 by Hawai`i Artist Hon Chew Hee. Our aim as an organization is to nurture and stimulate interest in water media through education, exhibits, and collaboration with other organizations, associations and individuals.

The Hawai`i Watercolor Society sponsors two juried exhibits every year as well as a biennial curated show highlighting the work of our signature members. In addition, we host periodic sales, themed shows and community events.

In conjunction with our exhibits we offer two week long workshops each year featuring nationally recognized teaching artists. On an intermittent basis we sponsor shorter duration workshops on a variety of art-related topics.

Stephen Quiller Intensive Workshop

April 8-12, 2019
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Daily

The workshop will emphasize transparent watercolor and the color palette from pure hue to neutrals. It will also explore new directions in experimental water media, combining watercolor, gouache and acrylics. Each day will include a demonstration and individual work with the artist.

The workshop combines both the outdoor and studio painting experience. In the studio we will focus on color theory, color relationships and composition. Our indoor location at Paki Hale, an historic estate at the foot of Diamond Head, provides views and easy access to Kapiolani Park and the beaches of Waikiki.

Fall Workshop

HWS is pleased to present one of our own for the Open Show Workshop in the fall of 2017. From Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, Patrice Federspiel will teach at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens in the workshop room.

In this class, you will learn the properties of color and color mixing to create bright, luminous paintings. Patrice will teach her Hide-N-Seek painting technique, using texture to create under-paintings. You will learn the art of negative painting to find your subject matter hiding amid the background. You will learn about softening edges, and providing contrast in your work. This process works for all genres.

You have the opportunity to learn to see the world through the eyes of an artist, and to ask the questions that help you unlock the messages within your paintings.

Prepare to be amazed. Join us for this exciting workshop.
