Hawai`i Watercolor Society

The Hawai`i Watercolor Society was founded in 1962 by Hawai`i Artist Hon Chew Hee. Our aim as an organization is to nurture and stimulate interest in water media through education, exhibits, and collaboration with other organizations, associations and individuals.

The Hawai`i Watercolor Society sponsors two juried exhibits every year as well as a biennial curated show highlighting the work of our signature members. In addition, we host periodic sales, themed shows and community events.

In conjunction with our exhibits we offer two week long workshops each year featuring nationally recognized teaching artists. On an intermittent basis we sponsor shorter duration workshops on a variety of art-related topics.

Brian Lerch

Brian Lerch is a self-taught abstract artist who found his form of self-expression through paint. With a career in healthcare, he discovered the best way to unplug was to turn his thoughts toward creation with colors and shapes. Prior to his career in healthcare, Brian's teen years were spent growing up in a machine shop outside of Milwaukee. You can see this industrial influence in the gritty aesthetic of his work. After moving to Oahu his work feels a bit more warm with hints of nature undoubtedly influenced by his Hawaiian surroundings.

Artist Statement: I love that abstract art allows you to feel an emotional connection to an unidentified image. Through the layers of paint, I am giving the piece a story to tell. I create textures and a physical depth that make you want to reach out and touch the canvas. The majority of my work can be found in acrylic paint, though I often add in mixed media for deeper character. I utilize pallet knives and minimize visible brush strokes to achieve an organic feel. Since I became a father my mantra has been Go Dad, Go!, so that's where you can find me on Instagram.
