The focus of this exciting workshop is to explore different ways of creating textures on the paper’s surface using strings, gauze, oriental papers, jute rope, sisal, cellophane, fabrics, leaves, plants, … everything but the kitchen sink. The works of art develop through a series of layers that may be taken to a realistic or abstract conclusion. Each student is encouraged to follow his or her own unique style in the process of painting.
Subject matter for demonstrations will include floral, intimate nature, and abstracted landscape. Subject matter is always of your choosing. Please bring photos to work from. The photos should not be too complicated, just a few simple shapes are best; one of our goals will be to simplify and strengthen our paintings.
The major element of the workshop will be on design and how to create a good strong painting. All the texture in the world, will not make a masterpiece; good design and a little planning will. One focus will be on increasing depth and values (making clear darks) and creating good “push pull” in our work. We will go through a step-by-step process for building a painting and discuss ways to critique our own work.
The most important part of class will be painting without worry, and enjoying the company of fellow artists.
Sue’s current body of work is entitled “Paintings to Touch” and focuses on creating textures on the paper’s surface with several different media. One of her goals in painting is to create a surface you enjoy visually, and want to touch. When she exhibits her work she has pieces of paintings available for clients to feel. Some texture is created with pure paint and some with collage, the fun is not being able to tell which is paint and that which is not.
The inspiration for her work comes from many sources, the sun drenched grapefruit of Scottsdale, soap bubbles in her kitchen sink, photos from Mars, and intimate looks at nature. She is more concerned with movement and feel in paintings than in the reality of the subject.
Her “Worry Free Painting” workshops, which she presents all over the country, focus on having fun with paint and paper, and enjoying the process. “Not to Worry” is one of her favorite quotes to her students. “Worry always shows in the work of art, one should paint with joy and authority and leave worrying for other things.”
